Smaug Headlines Magic: The Gathering's Hobbit Set on 14 August

Magic: The Gathering's Universes Beyond machine gets its biggest Tolkien moment yet on 14 August 2026, with The Hobbit set headlined by Smaug, the Magnificent in a stunning gilded variant. Wizards revealed the dragon at MagicCon Las Vegas on 1 May, and the design team admitted they had to break an unwritten internal rule to put a villain on the front of the box.

"We don't often do villainous headliners," the set's creative leads said during the preview panel, but Smaug was too iconic to pass on. The Gleaming Gold version of Smaug only appears in Collector Boosters, with roughly 500 copies printed across all languages. The card text always stays in English even when pulled from a French or Japanese pack, which has English-language collectors quietly thrilled and everyone else slightly grumpy.

Beyond the dragon, the set covers the full sweep of Tolkien's novel, from Bilbo at Bag End through the Trolls, Goblin Town, Gollum's riddles, the Spiders of Mirkwood, and the Lonely Mountain. Box Toppers include reprints of The One Ring, Tom Bombadil, and Sauron from the previous Lord of the Rings set, which is almost certainly going to push secondary market prices in interesting directions. Wizards is also slipping in Dwarven Language cards and Middle-earth Classic Artist cards as collector chase.
