Nathan Steuer Goes 8-0 on Pro Tour Strixhaven Day One

Pro Tour Secrets of Strixhaven kicked off at MagicCon Las Vegas on 1 May with a $500,000 prize pool, 325 qualified players, and former World Champion Nathan Steuer reminding everyone why he's a former World Champion. Steuer finished Day One with a perfect 8-0 record, the only player still undefeated heading into Sunday's finals.

The Strixhaven Standard metagame turned out spicier than anyone predicted. Izzet Prowess walked in as the assumed best deck and walked out with a wobbly 50% win rate, dragged down by the field knowing exactly how to interact with it. The breakout performer was Selesnya Landfall, a deck leaning on Earthbender Ascension and a returning Llanowar Elves to ramp into ridiculous turn-three plays. The Cosmos Heavy Play super-team of 24 pros, meanwhile, posted a 69% combined win rate in Booster Draft using deeply unconventional cards like Bulk Up in red-white aggro shells, which is already prompting MTG Arena ladder players to test wild lists.

Pro Tours are the sort of event where the metagame for the next three months gets baked in. If Selesnya Landfall holds up Sunday, expect Standard prices on Llanowar Elves and Earthbender Ascension to jump by Monday morning.

Coverage continues on Twitch and YouTube on Sunday from 11am PT (7pm BST), with Top 8 expected late evening UK time. If you've been considering jumping back into Standard, this is the weekend to watch and figure out where the metagame is settling.

If your group runs Friday Night Magic, list it on Backseat Gamer so other locals can find your shop.
