Reiner Knizia has just done something no board game designer has managed in the award's history. His elegant tile-layer Rebirth has won the Kennerspiel des Jahres 2026, the "connoisseur" category that sits alongside the main Spiel des Jahres, and with it Knizia becomes the first person to win all three of the jury's flagship prizes.

Start organising for freeThe maths works out neatly for a designer with a doctorate in it. Knizia took the main Spiel des Jahres in 2008 with Keltis, and the Kinderspiel des Jahres the same year with the children's detective game Wer war's?. The expert-level Kennerspiel category did not yet exist back then; it was added later, and it was the one trophy still missing from his shelf. Rebirth completes the set.
It's a fitting game to do it with. Two to four players rebuild a post-apocalyptic Scotland (flip the board for a tougher Ireland side), laying tiles and scoring on the spot as farms, energy sites and communities go down. Reviewers keep noting how a five-minute teach hides real strategic bite, calling it a showcase of Knizia's stripped-back style. It runs about 45 minutes and suits ages 10 and up. The jury agreed, praising a "simple core principle" that "opens up a variety of tactical options", with an elegant ruleset that "forces concentration on the essentials".
