Ravenloft: The Horrors Within Brings Cthulhu to D&D

Cthulhu is coming to Dungeons & Dragons, and he has apparently taken over a town. Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, the first big D&D book of 2026, makes H.P. Lovecraft's cosmic horror an official Darklord ruling a new Domain of Dread based on Innsmouth. It releases globally on 16 June 2026, with D&D Beyond subscribers getting early digital access from 2 June.

For anyone who runs spooky one-shots, this is the horror toolbox D&D has been missing since 2021's Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft. Built for the 2024 ruleset, the book spans gothic, dark fantasy, cosmic and occult horror, and packs in 17 Darklords with full stat blocks, including the vampire Strahd von Zarovich and the fallen knight Lord Soth, plus 51 monsters to throw at your table.

Players are not left out. There are seven horror-themed subclasses, nine Dark Gifts available as feats, and four playable species: returning favourites Dhampir, Hexblood and Reborn, joined by the new wolfish Lupin. The investigator background rounds things out for tables that want to play detective before the screaming starts.

The headline, though, is Cthulhu himself, statted up as a terrifying boss for high-level parties, sitting at the heart of the fog-bound Innsmouth domain. It is a bold swing for a setting best known for capes, candlelight and Castle Ravenloft.

If a Domain of Dread campaign sounds like your idea of a good evening, now is the time to round up a group. Find a D&D community near you or post a session and get the dice rolling.
