Set up your group for freeThe original Octopath Traveler (2018) was a critically acclaimed JRPG from Square Enix, beloved for its HD-2D visual style and eight-character story structure.
Designer Yura Kubota created the system alongside F.E.A.R. (FarEast Amusement Research), a Japanese TTRPG design studio founded in 1993 and known for Double Cross among other titles. The rules use a 2d6-based system, keeping the mechanical barrier low for players coming from the video game side who might not have tabletop experience.

See how it worksSet in the world of Orsterra within the official Octopath Traveler timeline, the game offers two approaches to character creation. You can build a custom character with a unique class and background, or pick up a pre-built (but customisable) sheet for one of the original video game characters. On the adventure side, the book includes canon pre-written scenarios, and gamemasters can also create original narratives.
This sits at a sweet crossover point between JRPG fans and tabletop RPG players. The 2d6 system makes it approachable, playing as the original characters gives it immediate appeal, and at 328 pages there is enough material to sustain a proper campaign. The book will be available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, bookshops, and comic shops.
Four years is a long wait for a translation, but better late than never.
