Board game nights rarely involve 30 people at one table, but Mega Empires wants to change that. Ares Games and Colossus Games are launching Mega Empires: The Far East on Kickstarter on 21 April at 4 PM CEST, adding two standalone civilisation games to a series that already holds the record for the most players around a single table.

Find events near youFar East North and Far East South each play 3-5 players as standalone experiences, covering dynasties and peoples from Japan down to Indonesia. Combine them and you can seat 10. But the real prize is bigger. Stack all four Mega Empires sets together with the Silk Road Expansion, and you get a 30-player civilisation game spanning from Western Europe to the Pacific. In February, 30 players from seven countries gathered at Joto Boardgame Cafe in Eindhoven for exactly that, proving the concept works in practice and not just on paper.
The Far East sets introduce pirate ships that block sea routes unless players pay tribute with a discarded trade card, adding negotiation to an already tense game of expansion across the map. Each set features new civilisation advances and calamities tailored to the region.

See how it worksMega Empires traces its roots to Francis Tresham's 1980 classic Civilization, the board game that inspired the famous video game series. Where the original topped out at seven players, this modern reimagining keeps scaling. The campaign runs until 14 May, with both standalone sets and combination bundles available.
If you are putting together a big game day this summer, this might be the excuse you need. Thirty players, one table, one winner. Find your local gaming group and start recruiting.
