Maskwitches Brings Its Drowned Doggerland RPG Back

Doggerland is the stretch of land that once joined Britain to mainland Europe before the North Sea swallowed it around 8,000 years ago. It is also the setting for one of the strangest, best-looking tabletop RPGs going, and Maskwitches of Forgotten Doggerland is back on the crowdfunding table for anyone who missed it first time.

Made by British studio Handiwork Games, the outfit of artist Jon Hodgson, Maskwitches is a psychedelic Mesolithic storytelling game. You play maskwitches, masked shamans who answer the troubles of Stone Age hunter-gatherer communities. Those troubles tend to take shape as strange and horrific creatures you fight through ritual magic rather than swords. It runs on the studio's own Silver Road rules, a light system built for narrative play rather than crunchy combat.

What sets it apart on the shelf is the art. Rather than digital illustration, Hodgson and fellow artist Paul Bourne built the world from photographs of physical sets, models and hand-made props, giving it the eerie, tactile feel of a stop-motion film. That look earned the pair an ENnie Award nomination for Best Art, Interior.

The new BackerKit campaign brings the existing books back into print alongside a fresh GM's Companion supplement for the folk running the game. If you fancy something a world away from the usual dungeon crawl, this is a rare one, and a good shout for a group looking to try a narrative RPG. Round up your table, find your players, and head somewhere that predates recorded history.
