Ascension is back, and it's bringing the One Ring with it. Stone Blade Entertainment has unveiled The Lord of the Rings: Ascension, a new physical deck-building game that adapts Tolkien's trilogy across three interconnected sets. A Gamefound campaign is locked in for summer 2026, with retail to follow later in the year.

Find events near youFor deck-builders of a certain age, this is a proper moment. The original Ascension launched in 2010, designed by ex-Magic: The Gathering pro Justin Gary, and helped popularise the now-ubiquitous "centre row" buying mechanic that still drives modern hits like Star Realms and Hero Realms. Until now, Stone Blade hadn't released a brand-new physical Ascension product in roughly 15 years. They've been working on this one for over a year.
Each of the three sets matches a film in the trilogy. Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King are standalone, but they combine into one campaign-style experience. Justin Gary describes the centrepiece mechanic as a tug-of-war between resisting the corruption of the Ring or giving in to it, building the Fellowship for unite bonuses, and earning honour by defeating iconic villains on the road to Sauron.

Start organising for freePlayer count is the usual 1 to 4, with games running 30 to 60 minutes. Confirmed art has shown Samwise, Gollum, Gandalf and Legolas, with the publisher promising a single unified visual style across all three sets. Licensing runs through Middle-earth Enterprises, with Asmodee handling distribution, so UK retail availability should be solid when retail copies follow the campaign.
If your group has been hunting for a snappier Middle-earth experience than Fate of the Fellowship's two-hour epics, this slots in nicely. Time to rally your hobbits, find a game night near you and start drafting a deck.
