Joe Manganiello's Death Saves Becomes an Official D&D Setting

A Dungeons & Dragons world where the gods are already dead, the forces of darkness have won, and a band of god-killers goes hunting Demon Lords. That is the pitch for Death Saves, and it makes its debut at Gen Con on Friday.

Death Saves started life as Joe Manganiello's clothing line, a fantasy and heavy metal streetwear brand built around metal art, illustration and typography. It is now becoming a place to play. The Gen Con event listing, run by Wizards of the Coast, bills "DEATH SAVES - First Ever LIVE Play!" as the debut of "the newest Dungeons & Dragons 'Black Label' setting", with Manganiello leading a party of god-killers to the doorstep of the Demon Lords.

Black Label is a telling choice of name, and Polygon points out that DC Comics uses the same label for its adult-audience imprint. The setting description reads accordingly: the great war has ended, the forces of darkness won, gods lie dead in droves, and the world hangs on by a thread. Polygon also reports that Manganiello has since renamed that conflict the Blood War, tying it to D&D's long-running feud between the devils of Baator and the demons of the Abyss, and that the setting was developed with Mike Mearls, co-lead designer on fifth edition. On Polygon's account, this is Mearls' first direct involvement with a mainline D&D product since he was laid off by Wizards of the Coast in 2023.

The live play runs for 90 minutes from 11:30am EDT on Friday, which is 4:30pm here, on the Janet Allen Stage at the Indiana Repertory Theater. Tickets are free, seating caps at 240, and no experience is required. Gen Con 2026 runs from 30 July to 2 August in Indianapolis.

Whether Death Saves turns into a full book line is still an open question, and Wizards has not published details beyond the event listing. For anyone who has been waiting for official D&D to go properly grim, Friday is the day to watch.
