Trading card games have been waiting a long time for this one. The first global TCG Awards will debut at Spiel Essen 2026, with the grand finale gala landing at the fair in October. Initiated by Card Sports League, the awards aim to give TCGs the kind of formal industry recognition that Spiel des Jahres provides for board games and the Origins Awards offer for RPGs.
Looking for board gamers near you? Browse local communities and find your next game night.
Find events near youThe timing is about right. Lorcana is setting sales records, the Cyberpunk TCG smashed the all-time Kickstarter tabletop funding record past $27 million, Altered TCG folded after a disappointing follow-up crowdfund, and Magic's Universes Beyond machine keeps pulling in licence sets, most recently Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. An industry that big needs a ceremony of its own.
Details are still thin on categories and voting process. Organisers say the awards will cover "the entire Trading Card Game ecosystem", so presumably design, art, competitive play and community work rather than just sets. The finalists will share the stage with Spiel Essen's already bulging October programme, which fills all eight halls of Messe Essen across four days for the first time.
Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.
See how it worksFor British TCG players, the timing is handy. The UK scene is busy, with Lorcana regionals selling out, Magic prereleases still packing local game stores on Friday nights, and Pokemon's spring rotation shaking up competitive play. If a set you've been grinding lands a nomination, expect the local hype to go up a notch.
Full category list and nominee dates are still to come at tcg-awards.com. Spiel Essen runs 22 to 25 October 2026, and if you host a regular card night, list your community on Backseat Gamer so your regulars can follow awards season with you.
