Everdell Emerland Brings the Critter City to the Jungle

Everdell, the much-loved game of woodland critters building a cosy forest city, is heading somewhere a lot warmer. Everdell Emerland, a new standalone release from Tycoon Games, swaps the forest valley for a humid jungle of vine-tangled ruins and buried treasure, and it is now up for preorder.

Emerland is the third standalone game in Everdell's "Edge of the Map" line, so there is no base game required to play it. It keeps the loop that made the series a hit: you send little critter workers out to gather resources, then play cards to build a tableau city and welcome new residents. What is new is the setting and the toys that come with it. Players explore 3D ruins dotted across the map and unearth ancient artefacts, and the 100 double-sided jungle cards can be upgraded as the game unfolds, so your city literally improves card by card. Four fresh worker types lead the expedition: capybaras, tree frogs, chameleons and monkeys.

It is pitched, like the rest of Everdell, as approachable but with real decisions underneath. A game runs 40 to 80 minutes for 1 to 4 players, ages 10 and up, so it sits comfortably as both a gateway game and a regular-night pick.

Preorders are open now at Tycoon Games for $50, with the retail edition still to come. Everdell has always been the kind of game that pulls non-gamers in through sheer charm, which makes Emerland a strong candidate for a learn-to-play night. If you fancy introducing it to your group, set up a session on Backseat Gamer and see who takes to jungle life.
