Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG Storms Into Gen Con 2026

Few tabletop projects have raised the kind of money the Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG did, and now the game is about to have its coming-out party at Gen Con 2026. Renegade Game Studios' adaptation of Matt Dinniman's cult LitRPG book series pulled in over 13.29 million dollars from 55,972 backers on BackerKit, and the physical game lands in the spotlight when the show runs from 30 July to 2 August.

See how it works

For the uninitiated, Dungeon Crawler Carl is a darkly comic series about ordinary people (and one very sharp-tongued cat) forced to survive a deadly, livestreamed dungeon after aliens flatten civilisation. The tabletop roleplaying game hands you that world: the core rulebook runs to more than 300 pages covering floors three to five of the World Dungeon, and you can play as favourites like Carl, Princess Donut, Florin and Prepotente or roll up your own crawler. The campaign also funded Unstoppable, a fast-paced standalone card game, so there is something for RPG groups and card-game nights alike.

To put the money in context, Renegade says it is the most-funded game project in BackerKit's history, the second most-funded tabletop RPG of all time on any platform, and the third most-funded tabletop game of any kind. That is rarefied air, and a sign of how devoted the Dungeon Crawler Carl fanbase has become.

At Gen Con, Renegade is going all in, with a Crawl Con room, statues of Carl, Donut and Samantha on the booth, and author Matt Dinniman plus audiobook narrator Jeff Hays running panels, signings and a livestreamed actual-play on the main stage. Backer copies are due to ship from October, with a retail release following in late November. Rally your party.
