The first big expansion to Drop Drive hits its last couple of days on Kickstarter this week, with the campaign closing Thursday 23 April. Drop Drive: Second Sun brings solo mode, co-op missions, planetary invasions, and a crew-for-hire system to Jason Miceli's quirky space sandbox.
Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.
See how it worksFor the uninitiated, Drop Drive is the game where you literally drop tokens from a few inches above the table to generate a random galaxy, then guide an alien starship captain through it in under 30 minutes. The base game launched on Kickstarter in 2021, raised $180,608 from 2,172 backers, hit retail in 2023, and earned a Dice Tower Seal of Approval. Miceli's earlier game, Dungeon Drop, used the same physical-drop mechanic to generate dungeon layouts, and Drop Drive remains his most successful project to date.
Second Sun is the first major expansion and it plugs the two things the base game did not do: playing alone and playing together. Solo and co-op modes let you chase the galaxy with friends or on your own, planetary invasions add escalating threats that rewrite the map each game, and a crew-for-hire system lets you staff your ship with specialists that grant unique abilities. A new mission system layers narrative hooks on top of the sandbox, and the whole thing slots into the original game rather than replacing it.
