Dice Throne Digital launched on Kickstarter on 14 April and has already cleared $325,000, tripling its $100,000 goal. The campaign promises to bring the hit dice-and-card battler to Steam, iOS, Android and Meta Quest with full cross-platform play. So far, so good. The problem? A growing number of backers are questioning whether the $60 Gold pledge is worth it.

Start organising for freeHere's the maths. When Dice Throne Digital goes free-to-play in February 2027, unlocking all eight launch heroes will cost roughly $70 through in-app purchases. That means the Kickstarter's main pledge tier saves you about $10 for the privilege of becoming a beta tester several months early. As one backer put it: "Saving $10 is NOT worth backing versus waiting for the app to release."
The Gold tier does include some cosmetic extras, alpha access starting in August and a mention in the credits. But notably absent are features like offline play for the roguelite campaign mode and AI opponents for solo 1v1 matches. For a game created by Nate Chatellier and Manny Trembley that built its tabletop reputation on accessible head-to-head combat, those missing features sting.

Find events near youDice Throne has been a tabletop success story since its first Kickstarter in 2017. The physical game's blend of Yahtzee-style dice rolling with card-driven abilities has earned it a loyal following across multiple seasons and expansions. The digital version launches with the original eight heroes: Barbarian, Monk, Moon Elf, Ninja, Paladin, Pyromancer, Shadow Thief and Treant.
The campaign still has time to address the community's concerns, and with over three times its goal raised, it's clearly not struggling for interest. But the backlash highlights a broader tension in crowdfunding: when free-to-play is on the horizon, convincing fans to pay upfront gets harder.
