Dungeons & Dragons is rebooting its organised play programme with a proper seasonal arc, and the first chapter, Season of Horror, opens at game shops in early June. If you run a local group and want an excuse to pull in new players without building your own campaign, this is it.

Start organising for freeDetails landed this week via ICv2, which confirmed that early-access WPN Premium stores can run the D&D Encounters Celebration event from 5-14 June 2026, followed by standard WPN stores from 19-28 June. The season ties directly into the new Ravenloft: The Horrors Within sourcebook, out 16 June, alongside a Tarokka card deck, DM screen and map pack, per Dungeon Mister.
After the opening celebration, the season rolls into four weeks of D&D Encounters weekly play via a digital play kit. WPN stores in select regions (the UK included) can also grab a limited physical kit, capped at 1,000 worldwide for stores that schedule the celebration event. Each kit contains five printed copies of the Encounters adventure, five tactical maps, 25 pre-made characters in five-pack bundles, player rewards for up to 25 players and DM rewards for up to five organisers.

See how it worksThe original Curse of Strahd is widely regarded as one of 5E's best-loved campaigns, and The Horrors Within expands that setting in ways long-time players will want to dig into. The new book adds stat blocks for all 17 Darklords, including Strahd (a proper d20 combat option for the vampire count), and brings Innsmouth into the Domains of Dread for the first official Lovecraftian crossover in 5E, according to the Wizards WPN listing.
For UK organisers, this is a neat hook. Local shops running Encounters need DMs and players, and seasonal kits mean you don't need to plan your own adventure arc to host new tables. If you're thinking of running a Ravenloft night or promoting a public session at your friendly local, list your event on Backseat Gamer so new players can find it. Horror-themed D&D with a deadline is a great recruitment pitch.
