For anyone who organised D&D nights in the early 2010s, here's a name you'll remember. Wizards of the Coast is bringing back D&D Encounters, the weekly in-store program that ran from 2010 to 2014 and was, for a lot of players, their first proper taste of organised play. The revival was confirmed at GAMA Expo in March and fleshed out during ICv2's Game Store Week on 23 April, with full kit details now in the open.

Set up your group for freeThe structure is built around the new D&D Seasons system. Each three-month season starts with an Opening Weekend Play Kit at participating Wizards Play Network stores, followed by four weekly Encounters sessions. The first season, kicking off in June, ties to Ravenloft: The Horrors Within. Wednesday is the suggested night, which is exactly when most casual D&D groups already meet.
Each WPN store gets a meaty kit. That's five printed copies of the seasonal adventure, 25 pre-made characters across five archetypes, five tactical maps, rewards for up to 25 players and five DMs, plus printed organiser instructions. The whole package is designed for a store to hand to a new DM and have them running a proper weekly table within a fortnight.
Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.
See how it worksThe original Encounters was huge for the hobby. It introduced thousands of players to D&D in a low-commitment, drop-in format and helped lock in the friendly local game store as the heart of organised play. Bringing it back ties neatly into the broader push to grow in-store D&D communities alongside the bigger adventure book releases.
If you're a store owner, organiser or aspiring DM eyeing the Wednesday-night slot, this is a ready-made framework. And if you're hosting a Season of Horror table at your shop or community space, list your event for free on Backseat Gamer. It's a quick way to fill a table with new players who already game in your area.
