Ciaphas Cain Gets His First Official Warhammer 40K Model

One of Warhammer 40,000's best-loved characters is finally getting a miniature. Games Workshop has revealed that Commissar Ciaphas Cain, the gloriously self-serving Hero of the Imperium from Sandy Mitchell's long-running Black Library novels, is making the jump from page to tabletop, alongside his loyal and famously unwashed aide Ferik Jurgen.

Cain has been a fan favourite for roughly 25 years. Mitchell's books play the grim darkness of the far future for laughs, following a commissar who survives one battle after another through dumb luck, quick thinking and a healthy instinct for self-preservation, while everyone around him mistakes his cowardice for heroism. The new kit captures the double act well. Cain strikes a suitably heroic pose with his chainsword resting on the shoulder of a billowing greatcoat, while Jurgen is sculpted as a grizzled Valhallan trooper in a thick fur hat, meltagun at the ready, with a flask and mug so he can keep his commissar supplied with tanna tea. You can build the pair on separate bases or back-to-back on a larger base as a small diorama.

The model joins the Astra Militarum, the rank-and-file human army of the 40K setting, and Games Workshop says it will be available to pre-order soon. Black Library is marking the moment as well, with an illustrated and annotated edition of For the Emperor, the first Cain novel, carrying 15 new illustrations and 130 notes from Mitchell. The author said he had been writing the Cain stories for around a quarter of a century but "never expected him to make the transition to the tabletop", adding that he is keen to roll a few dice and see how his anti-hero performs. No release date or price has been confirmed yet.
