It runs on Basic Roleplaying, the d100 system that powers Call of Cthulhu, so anyone who has played that will feel at home rolling under their skills. The quickstart comes with four ready-made heroes and a complete adventure, which means a group can sit down and start playing in an evening with no character creation and no prep.
The setting is the draw. Age of Vikings trades cosmic horror for the feuds, longships and shaky alliances of medieval Iceland, famously a land with no kings or queens. The full game is already out, with a hardcover core rulebook at $59.99 (around £47) and a PDF at $29.99, plus a Games Master screen and an intro adventure, The Cursed Farm. The Free RPG Day quickstart, though, costs nothing, which makes it the cheapest way to learn whether d100 Viking adventuring suits your table before committing to the big book.
