Warhammer 40K Brings Back Apocalypse for Massive Battles

Games Workshop is bringing back Apocalypse, its ruleset for running massive-scale Warhammer 40,000 battles, with the Eye of Terror: Reign of Iron expansion. Pre-orders opened on April 4 with a release date of April 18.

The last standalone Apocalypse system arrived in 2019 and required learning an entirely separate game. This new version takes a different approach, using the core Warhammer 40,000 rules with modular adjustments you can add or remove depending on how you like to play. Want to streamline a 5,000-point game without spending all weekend on it? Pick the modules that speed things up. Prefer the full, grinding detail? Keep everything switched on.

Eye of Terror comes as a three-book slipcase. The first book covers the narrative of the Iron Warriors' assault on the Cadian Gate, led by new character Warsmith Kravek Morne under the direction of Daemon Primarch Perturabo. The second book contains the Apocalypse rules themselves. The third delivers new detachments for five factions: Chaos Space Marines, Space Marines, Chaos Knights, Imperial Knights, and Adeptus Mechanicus, including options for Vashtorr's daemon engines, Freeblade mercenary Knights, and cohorts of Skitarii.

New models accompany the release, including a new Defiler, the Archmagos Thulia Ghuld for Adeptus Mechanicus, and the Knight Destrier for Imperial Knights. With Warhammer 40K's 11th edition arriving in June, this looks like a fitting send-off for 10th edition's final chapter.
