Warhammer 40,000's New Edition Lands With Armageddon Box

The biggest miniatures game in the world is about to reset, and the launch pad is a planet at war. Games Workshop is rolling out a new edition of Warhammer 40,000, its 11th, and it goes on sale inside a boxed set called Warhammer 40,000: Armageddon that the studio is calling its biggest launch set yet. Pre-orders open on Saturday 6 June.

Armageddon pits Space Marines against Orks, the pairing that has anchored 40,000 starter boxes for decades. If you are new to all this, 40,000 is the hobby of collecting and painting miniatures and then fighting tabletop battles with them, and a launch box is the cheapest way into two armies at once. This one is packed with new and updated kits, including a redesigned Intercessor squad and fresh Ork Boyz, plus the Operation Imperator book so you can start a campaign straight out of the box.

The new edition is more than a fresh box of plastic. Games Workshop is shipping over 70 Detachments at launch, swapping the old circular objective tokens for terrain markers, and reworking how cover affects shooting. If you bounced off the previous edition's rules bloat, this is the natural moment to give 40,000 another go.

Editions like this are rocket fuel for local scenes, because everyone is relearning the game at the same time. Launch weekends fill stores, and demo tables run hot for weeks afterwards. If you have been meaning to get into 40,000, or want to drag your old crew back to the table, round up a group and book a learn-to-play while the edition is brand new. Games Workshop says the box will be available while stocks last, so the keen will want to be ready when pre-orders go live.
