War of the Dragon: Wheel of Time Hits Kickstarter 27 May

Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time has spawned a TV series and a devoted fanbase, but the tabletop has stayed surprisingly quiet. That changes on Wednesday 27 May, when Dire Wolf launches the Kickstarter for War of the Dragon: The Wheel of Time, a two-player grand strategy game that spans the whole arc of Jordan's epic saga.

See how it works

Dire Wolf, the studio behind the deck-building hit Dune: Imperium and the Clank! series, has form with licensed strategy games, and War of the Dragon is its biggest swing at the genre yet. It is a head-to-head game combining tableau building, set collection and area control. One player works to save the world, the other to break it, with the action running from the Battle of the Two Rivers right through to the Last Battle.

The game ships with two ways to play. Hero Mode is the streamlined option pitched at newcomers, focused on guiding key characters, recruiting allies and fighting for control of the map. Epic Mode is the full experience, layering in story beats, marching armies, large-scale battles and a climactic Last Battle endgame.

Ahead of the launch, Dire Wolf published a designer Q&A. Original designers Mike Mihealsick and Ryan Schoon have been working on the concept since 2018, with Dire Wolf's Andy Clautice and Justin Cohen handling additional design and development. Mihealsick described a long road to getting the project made, noting how rare it is for a publisher to both take a pitch from independent designers and hold the Wheel of Time licence. "When we heard that Dire Wolf had the rights, we knew we had to reach out," he said.

Pricing, player aids and stretch goals will land with the campaign itself on 27 May. Hero Mode means you will not need to have read the whole saga to get into it, though the Wheel of Time obsessive in your group will want the link the moment it goes live.
