The game that held BGG's #1 spot for over five years is getting the birthday it deserves. GMT Games has put the Twilight Struggle 20th Anniversary Hall of Fame Edition on its P500 preorder programme, and it's looking like the definitive version of one of the hobby's most important designs.
Designers Ananda Gupta and Jason Matthews first met at a gaming club at George Washington University in 1998. What started as a Cold War-themed experiment became the most influential two-player card-driven game ever made. Over the course of roughly three hours, you and an opponent each control a superpower, playing cards that either advance your global influence or hand your rival an event you'd rather not trigger. Twilight Struggle sits at 8.3 on BGG, won more awards than most publishers' entire catalogues, and was inducted into both the GAMA Hall of Fame (2024) and the BGG Hall of Fame (2025).
The new edition features a completely redesigned box and map by artist Terry Leeds, with the classic Mark Simonitch map preserved on the reverse side. GMT has bundled in the Turn Zero variant, the Alternative Space Race, and a brand new alt-history scenario called "Red Sun Rising" with its own card set. Collectors will also find both Kickstarter Promo Packs and a selection of cards previously exclusive to foreign editions. A retrospective booklet with essays from both designers rounds out the package.
P500 pricing sits at $60 (eventual MSRP: $94), which is solid value for what you're getting. If you've never played Twilight Struggle, this is the version to start with. If you've worn through your Deluxe Edition copy, it's a good excuse to rally a friend for game night.
