Sword World has been Japan's answer to Dungeons & Dragons for close to four decades. Created by Group SNE in 1989 and played by millions of Japanese gamers since, it has never been officially available in English. That changes next month. Mugen Gaming, a Kansas-based localisation studio, will launch a BackerKit campaign on 12 May to fund the first official English translation of the Sword World 2.5 Core Rulebook.

See how it worksThe game's origins are woven into one of anime's most recognisable franchises. In 1986, Group SNE co-founder Ryo Mizuno began publishing transcripts of his D&D sessions in Comptiq magazine. Those "replays" became Record of Lodoss War, one of Japan's first homegrown high fantasy series, which spawned anime, manga, and video games. When licensing issues with TSR prevented an official Lodoss sourcebook, Mizuno and Group SNE built their own system. Sword World launched in affordable paperback format and overtook D&D in Japan within a few years.
The system runs on 2d6 rolls with a multi-class progression that lets characters develop across multiple roles at once. Combat uses a side-based system without grids, keeping fights fast and cinematic. The 432-page deluxe rulebook being translated compiles the first three Japanese rulebooks into a single volume.
