When Contention Games launched the Slay the Spire: Downfall expansion on Kickstarter ten days ago, it hit its $50,000 goal in ten minutes and racked up $2.5 million on day one. Now the campaign has more than doubled, passing $5.26 million from over 26,000 backers with the finish line still a week away on April 9.
Downfall adapts the beloved PC mod that lets players switch sides and play as the bosses. The board game version is a cooperative deck-builder where each player controls a uniquely asymmetric boss character, battling through increasingly dangerous encounters on the way to a showdown with Neow. You can play as Slime Boss, Guardian, Hexaghost, or Hermit. A reprint of the base game is also available as an add-on for anyone who missed it.
Contention Games has been running daily content reveals throughout the campaign, unlocking new boss content, potions, cards, and events as the total climbs. A Kickstarter-exclusive "Bag of Preparation" carrying case, designed to house the entire Slay the Spire board game collection, has proved a popular add-on for collectors.
Downfall is one of the biggest board game Kickstarters of the year. The villain-role premise, adapted from the fan-made PC mod that earned an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on Steam, has clearly resonated. The campaign closes April 9 at 12pm PDT.
