If you have ever wanted to chase a seat at the Round Table without rolling up an RPG character, Siege Perilous is worth a look. It is a competitive Arthurian board game for 1 to 4 players from Play to Z, and it heads to Gamefound this week.

Set up your group for freeThe hook is the seat itself. In the legend, the Siege Perilous is the empty chair at Arthur's table reserved for the one knight pure enough to survive sitting in it. Here, players ride out across twelve kingdoms of Arthur's Britain, training skills, building virtues and meeting more than a hundred figures drawn from five centuries of Arthurian stories, all chasing the renown to claim that seat. It plays as a euro-style sandbox rather than a dungeon crawl. The map shifts as events unfold and Merlin hands out tasks, so no two games trace the same path. Quests force a choice between grace and earthly power, and you will also scrap with rival knights in tournaments and courtly politics. Expect somewhere between 90 minutes and three hours at the table, according to early retail listings.
What sets it apart is the art. Every illustration is an original painting by Jay Johnstone, who produced more than 250 works for the game using traditional medieval techniques, pigments and real gold leaf. That gives the whole thing the look of an illuminated manuscript rather than the usual digital fantasy gloss, which feels right for a game steeped in British myth.

Find events near youWargamer has likened the open-world, build-your-own-knight structure to the video game Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and the follow page is up now ahead of the campaign launching on 23 June. If it clicks, this is the kind of grand, solo-friendly box that can anchor a whole evening. Time to rally the round table and find a game night near you.
