Rebirth: Knizia's Tile-Layer Could Make Awards History

If you have been meaning to try a new Reiner Knizia game, here is the one with a trophy riding on it. Rebirth, the designer's tile-laying eurogame from Mighty Boards (with Frosted Games handling the German edition), is a nominee for the 2026 Kennerspiel des Jahres, and a win would complete a clean sweep of Germany's three big awards that Knizia has chased for nearly two decades.

The game itself is classic Knizia: simple to teach, sharp to play. Each turn you draw a tile and place it on a shared map, gradually filling the land with farms, settlements and energy as you build castles, ports and cathedrals and tick off quests. The board is double-sided, with Scotland on the gentler beginner side and Ireland for groups who want a tougher puzzle. It plays in 30 to 60 minutes for two to four players, ages 10 and up.

The theme is a refreshing change from the usual grimdark. Rather than conquest, Rebirth imagines a lush, hopeful future where you help clans rebuild old lands. The Spiel des Jahres jury singled out how its straightforward core "opens up a multitude of tactical possibilities," with direct competition on the shared board keeping everyone involved.

See how it works

Knizia hardly needs the validation, with more than 800 published games and a Spiel des Jahres already to his name for Keltis. But the Kennerspiel is the one major German award that has always eluded him, and Rebirth is his best shot yet. Winners are announced on 12 July.

UK players do not have to wait for the verdict. Rebirth is on board game shop shelves now. Time to clear the table. Round up your group.
