If you like your horror games light on rules and heavy on dread, Paizo has something brewing. The publisher best known for the crunchy, dice-heavy world of Pathfinder brought 13 Omens, its new rules-light horror RPG, to UK Games Expo 2026 for hands-on demos at the end of May.

Start organising for freeThat is a real change of pace for Paizo. 13 Omens is a modern, supernatural horror game built around "horrifying specters, bloodthirsty killers, cursed places, and secrets best left unknown," set in what Paizo calls a dark reflection of our own world. Rather than the thick rulebooks Pathfinder players are used to, it runs on a deliberately easy-to-learn engine designed to ratchet up the tension as a session builds toward a grim finish.
It comes from a strong pairing. Jason Bulmahn, the lead designer who shaped Pathfinder, is co-designing alongside Joe Pasini, and the two have leaned into a stripped-back style that should suit one-shots and short campaigns far more than a sprawling fantasy epic.

See how it worksThe UK Games Expo outing was a proper showcase rather than a quiet table in the corner. Paizo publisher Erik Mona and Bulmahn flew over to run full three-hour demo sessions themselves, giving British players an early taste well before the game is finished.
There is no firm release date yet, with Paizo inviting interested players to sign up for updates as development continues. For a studio that has spent years synonymous with one very large rules system, a nimble horror game is an intriguing left turn. If it sounds like your kind of fright night, it is the sort of game you can gather a few friends for, so rally your group and give it a go when it lands.
