Nippon: Zaibatsu Re-Engineers a Cult Economic Euro

Nippon, the tightly wound economic engine-builder that euro fans have quietly treasured for years, is getting a ground-up rebuild. Nippon: Zaibatsu from CrowD Games is no tarted-up reprint with shinier bits. It is a full reworking of the original game, and pre-orders are open now ahead of a Q2 2026 release.

In Nippon: Zaibatsu you run a zaibatsu, one of the industrial conglomerates that powered Japan's Meiji-era boom. You invest in factories, lay railroads and fight rivals for area majority across a rapidly modernising nation. It is a meaty game for 1-4 players that runs 60 to 120 minutes, built for people who like their economics sharp and their turns agonising.

Designers Nuno Bizarro Sentieiro and Paulo Soledade have kept the bones of their original Nippon, the distinctive worker-selection and consolidation rounds, but reworked almost everything around them. There are new resource types, double-sided factories that add far more variety, revised ship mechanics with fresh Iwakura mission rules, and beefier consolidation rewards. The new edition also adds a fully integrated, automa-driven solo mode that the original never had.

Early word is warm. Nerdly's review called it "a thoughtful, elegant re-imagining of a modern classic" and handed it four stars out of five.

Two versions are on the table, a standard box and a deluxe Emperor's Edition. If you missed the original first time round, this is a clean way in. Heavy euros like this one live or die on the table, so it is worth lining up a regular group before it lands. You can find players near you on Backseat Gamer.
