Stone Blade Entertainment has revealed Lord of the Rings: Ascension, a new standalone deckbuilder that runs the studio's classic engine through the Shire, the mines of Moria and the gates of Mordor. It's landing on Gamefound later this year, and it comes out of a partnership between Stone Blade and Asmodee, who took over as Middle-earth Enterprises' exclusive tabletop category manager last October.

Find events near youAscension, for the uninitiated, launched in 2010 as the first deckbuilder to swap Dominion's fixed supply for a rolling, randomised centre row. That one design decision seeded a cottage industry of deckbuilders and influenced Star Realms, Clank! and pretty much everything after. The original was co-designed by Stone Blade CEO and former Magic: The Gathering pro Justin Gary, and the game has kept a steady community for fifteen years.
The Lord of the Rings version is a 1-4 player game spread across three interconnected Ascension sets covering the trilogy, which can be played individually or shuffled together for one bigger Middle-earth experience. The headline new mechanic is Corruption, a risk-reward system built around the One Ring's influence. Lean into it for power, push too far and you lose. Players compete to build the best fellowship, collect iconic heroes and weapons, and make branching story choices that steer each run towards resisting or serving Sauron.

Start organising for freeTolkien licences have been getting rolled out onto tabletops every other week lately, so it's fair to roll your eyes at another one. Ascension is the rare case where the base engine is genuinely interesting on its own merits and the corruption arc in Tolkien is a surprisingly natural fit for a deckbuilder's tempo. Keep an eye on Gamefound for the campaign launch, and if you fancy getting it to the table this year, round up your group in advance.
