HYVE Roll-and-Colour Beehive Game Buzzes Past $192K

If you thought roll-and-write games peaked at breezy 15-minute fillers, HYVE is here to change your mind. This roll-and-colour beehive simulator from Aerobellum Games has raised over $192,000 on Kickstarter from nearly 1,850 backers, and it is doing something fresh with the genre.

Each turn, you roll dice representing worker bees and assign them to tasks around the hive. Collect nectar, build new comb, tend larvae, fend off threats. It looks approachable, but HYVE is a proper strategy game underneath the cosy exterior. The Meeple Guild described it as a game with "a lot of decision making and challenge" that pushes the roll-and-write format well beyond its usual lightweight territory.

HYVE started life as a print-and-play title from Aerobellum Games, a small studio founded in 2024 by friends who met online during the pandemic. The digital version built a loyal following, and this Kickstarter campaign brings it into physical form with a super-deluxe edition. Pledges include a Legacy Edition (1-4 players, with additional copies needed for multiplayer) and a dedicated Multiplayer Edition for 2-4 players out of the box, with the campaign already at 3,855% of its $5,000 goal.

Win conditions add variety too. You can aim to survive a full year, fill all six hives, or elevate your colony to "thriving" status. Each path demands different strategies, so no two runs feel the same.

The campaign runs until 14 April 2026. If you enjoy the puzzle of a good roll-and-write but wish the genre had more teeth, HYVE is worth a look.
