Finspan: Sharks & Reefs Brings Coral Reefs and Sharks

If Finspan hooked your group, Stonemaier has just given it more to chew on. Sharks & Reefs is the first expansion for the underwater spin-off of Wingspan, and it adds two big new ideas: living coral reefs and, yes, sharks.

Stop juggling Meetup, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets. One platform for your gaming group's events, RSVPs, and member management.

See how it works

Finspan is the aquatic cousin of Wingspan, the smash hit from designer Elizabeth Hargrave that turned bird-watching into one of the most popular board games of recent years. Designed by Michael O'Connell and David Gordon, Finspan keeps the same gentle engine-building rhythm: you stock a personal ocean across three dive sites, play fish, and build up chains of abilities over 45 to 60 minutes for 1 to 5 players.

The expansion threads coral reefs through that engine. You now nurture colourful reefs in each of your three dive sites, and healthy reefs let you play powerful reef fish at a discount, unlock abilities, and score end-game bonuses, giving you a fresh route to victory that does not just chase the biggest fish. The sharks add a bit of menace: they scatter your schools of young to seed new schools elsewhere, and leave behind scraps that any fish in your ocean can feed on. All told it is 75 new fish cards plus five starter cards, 90 coral tokens, reef overlays and an updated solo Automa mode developed by David Studley, with Hargrave herself among the development team.

It needs the Finspan base game to play and lands at £30 ($30). If Finspan had started to feel a little samey, reefs and sharks are exactly the kind of shake-up that earns a game another few nights on the table. Time to get the shoal back together and find a table near you.
