Dungeon Crawler Carl Tops $7.25M, Third-Biggest BackerKit Ever

The Dungeon Crawler Carl RPG + Unstoppable campaign is now the third most-funded project in BackerKit history, barrelling past $7.25 million with 31,601 backers as of 22 April. It's ahead of everything on the platform bar two Brandon Sanderson projects, Hoid's Storybook Collection at nearly $12 million and Words of Radiance Leatherbound at around $23 million. And it's still got three weeks to go.

Renegade Game Studios launched the dual campaign on 14 April for two fully licensed adaptations of Matt Dinniman's LitRPG series. The first is Dungeon Crawler Carl: The Roleplaying Game, a skill-based d20 system in which your party plays Crawlers trapped in the brutal televised World Dungeon while the GM runs the sadistic System AI. It's a fresh build rather than Renegade's usual Essence 20 engine, with stats, skill checks, levels and mob rules written specifically for the Crawl. The second is Unstoppable, a solo and co-op card-crafting deck-builder where you play one of the main cast, tweaking your deck mid-run as the System lobs traps, creatures and new enemies at you. Pledges start around $55 for the bronze tier and climb to $490 for the celestial all-in.

For context, Dinniman's books have become one of the biggest word-of-mouth hits in fantasy in years. The series started as a self-published serial on Royal Road in 2020, was picked up by Ace Books in 2024, and has shifted over six million copies across its first seven volumes according to Penguin Random House. A television adaptation is also in the works.

Renegade has a reasonably steady crowdfunding track record with recent TTRPG titles delivered to backers on schedule, so the infrastructure for a campaign this size is already in place. Fulfilment is targeted for October 2026, with "customs friendly" regional warehousing intended to shield international backers from the tariff chaos that has been hammering the hobby. The campaign closes on 15 May.
