Dice Throne, the tabletop dice combat game that has grown from a 2017 Kickstarter into a franchise spanning two seasons, a Marvel collaboration, and an Adventures expansion, is going digital. The Kickstarter for Dice Throne Digital launches on April 14, bringing the game to iOS, Android, Steam, and Meta Quest with full cross-platform play from day one.
The standout feature is the Meta Quest version, which supports mixed reality. The digital board and dice appear on your actual coffee table, blending tabletop and digital play in a way few games have attempted. It's a natural fit for a game that already revolves around rolling dice and activating hero abilities.
Nerd Ninjas, the indie studio behind the project, is led by Nate Chatellier, who co-created the original Dice Throne with Manny Trembley. Having the game's co-creator at the helm of the digital adaptation matters; too many board-game-to-app translations lose the feel of the original because the developers didn't understand what made it click.
For anyone unfamiliar, Dice Throne is a competitive game where players pick unique heroes and battle by rolling and upgrading dice to trigger powerful abilities. Think Yahtzee crossed with a fighting game. It plays quickly, it's easy to teach, and the heroes are varied enough that it stays interesting after dozens of matches.
Details on game modes, launch pricing, and backer exclusives will be revealed when the campaign goes live on April 14. If you want to be notified, the Kickstarter pre-launch page is already accepting sign-ups.
