D&D Lets You Become a Lich in New Free Playtest

Ever wanted to anchor your soul to a jar and achieve immortality through dark magic? Wizards of the Coast just made that an official game mechanic. The new Villainous Options Unearthed Arcana, released April 2 as a free PDF, gives D&D players four evil subclasses and two transformation paths that let characters become a lich or a death knight. This is playtest material, so it could change based on player feedback before any official release.

The four subclasses lean hard into the darker corners of the multiverse. The Pestilence Domain Cleric worships gods of disease and can eventually transform into a swarm of plague-ridden pests. The Circle of the Titan Druid pushes Wild Shape to its limits, growing to Gargantuan size and swallowing enemies whole. The Hell Knight Fighter wields hellfire weapons that leave wounds which refuse to close. And the Demonic Sorcery Sorcerer corrupts everything nearby with an abyssal aura that oozes caustic slime and warps the environment.

The real draw, though, is the two Villainous Paths. These are feat trees that gradually transform your character into a D&D big bad. The Path of the Death Knight is built for martial characters, granting hellfire attacks and immunity to poison. The Path of the Lich is open to any spellcaster and lets you bind your soul to a spirit jar, consume souls for power, and ultimately cheat death itself.

The timing lines up with D&D's 2026 Season of Horror. The Ravenloft: The Horrors Within sourcebook lands on June 16, and these subclasses feel like an appetiser. The playtest survey opens April 9, so roll up something wicked and tell Wizards what you think.
