Chaosium's Time Without Tide Drops d100 for a d6 Pool

Chaosium has spent decades as the house of the hundred-sided dice, the studio whose Call of Cthulhu and Basic Roleplaying run on percentile rolls. Its new game throws that out. Time Without Tide is a brand-new tabletop RPG built on a d6 dice-pool system, a real change of pace for the publisher, and it has just gone up for pre-launch on BackerKit.

The setting is the draw. Time Without Tide is set in a fog-shrouded, faux-Victorian post-apocalypse, a ruined world of arcane machinery and creeping dread. Players take on the role of Delvers, the brave or foolish souls who venture out beyond the safety of fortified walls into mutating, dangerous territory to see what is left of the world. If you have enjoyed Chaosium's knack for atmosphere and slow-building horror, the mood here should feel familiar even if the dice do not.

Swapping a signature d100 system for a handful of d6s is a notable step. It tends to mean faster, swingier rolls and a lower barrier for new players, which suits a game built around exploration and pushing your luck in hostile ground.

Best of all, you can try before you back. Chaosium has put out a free quickstart with the basic rules, a slice of the setting and a ready-to-run scenario, so your group can take Time Without Tide for a spin without spending a penny.

That makes it an easy pick for a one-shot. Grab the quickstart, gather a few players and see if the fog suits your table before the campaign proper begins.
