Awaken Realms Buys Thundergryph, Tang Garden's Maker

If you have ever fancied Tang Garden or Darwin's Journey and found them sold out everywhere, there is good news. Awaken Realms, the Polish powerhouse behind Nemesis and Tainted Grail, has bought Thundergryph Games, the studio responsible for some of the prettiest euro games on the shelf. It is Awaken Realms' first-ever acquisition, announced on 24 June.

Thundergryph built its reputation on lavish production and table presence. Tang Garden, a serene game for 1-4 players about building a garden in Tang-dynasty China, and Darwin's Journey, a meaty worker-placement euro retracing Darwin's voyage to the Galapagos, both became collector favourites for their looks as much as their play. The snag has always been availability. Print runs sold through, and UK copies tended to vanish from shelves or carry import-sized price tags.

That is the part worth caring about. Awaken Realms says it has delivered more than 700,000 games worldwide, and it now takes over Thundergryph's logistics, manufacturing and distribution. Thundergryph keeps its own brand, and founder Gonzalo Aguirre Bisi stays on as a game director. Awaken Realms CEO Marcin Swierkot said the team was "really impressed by the Thundergryph portfolio" and how it makes "very interesting and beautiful games", he told BoardGameWire.

In practice that should mean steadier reprints and easier access for British buyers who have spent years hunting these games second-hand. The studio's next project, a Galileo-themed heavy euro called Galileo's Truth, is already lined up for Gamefound.
