Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation Returns in 2026

One of the sharpest two-player games of the early 2000s is coming back. Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation, Reiner Knizia's hidden-movement duel first published in 2002, is being re-released by Ghost Galaxy in a new Ultimate Edition, and UK players can pre-order it now. If you have ever wanted a tense, asymmetric head-to-head set in Middle-earth, this is the one collectors have been chasing on the second-hand market for years.

One player commands Sauron's forces hunting for the Ring, while the other guides the Fellowship and tries to sneak Frodo all the way to Mount Doom. Units move face down, so every advance is a bluff and a guess, with character cards swinging the fights. Ghost Galaxy calls it one of the most critically acclaimed games set in Tolkien's world, and it has long been out of print. The Ultimate Edition is the beefiest version yet, with a larger board, bigger sculpted figure stands, fresh artwork, 18 brand-new characters and four new Special Cards on top of the classic line-up.

Ghost Galaxy lists it at $54.99, while UK buyers can grab it through Clownfish Games for £45.99. For a game that fits in a small box and plays quickly, it is a strong shout for date-night or a quick decider before the big game comes out. Worth lining up an opponent and seeing who is up for a session.
